Cade Cunningham exited the game early against the Washington Wizards after playing just five minutes. After the Pistons won the game 130-117, ESPN analyst Shams Charania shared that the Pistons guard was diagnosed with a collapsed lung. This would have come as a huge blow to the team, as Cunningham is the centerpiece of their offense.
A collapsed lung, biological name Pneumothorax, is a condition in which air gets inside your chest cavity and creates pressure against your lung, causing it to collapse partially or fully.
Cade Cunningham is also featured among the top-5 in the NBA MVP ladder this season. However, an extended hiatus due to injury could take him out of the contention for the NBA awards due to the 65-game rule. There is still no confirmation on how many games the guard will miss in the last phase of the regular season.
How Cade Cunningham’s injury could impact the Pistons?
Cade Cunningham was earlier diagnosed with back spasms, but kept playing with some breaks to lead the team to the top of the Eastern Conference. Even though he has been sidelined for a long time due to a collapsed lung, the team is in good condition before the regular season.
However, if Cunningham’s injuries extend for long, the playoff run can become difficult for the team. In his absence, Jalen Duren’s ability to lead the offense would be tested against one of the stronger teams in the league in the coming games.
While Cunningham averages 24.5 points and 9.9 rebounds and leads the franchise, Duren has had an All-Star season. He scored 36 points and 11 rebounds in the last game against the Wizards after Cunningham went out of the game.
