What Happened Between Alperen Sengun and Referee Jenna Reneau? Rockets Big Man Breaks Silence on Controversial Incident

The Houston Rockets and the Boston Celtics’ February 4 encounter had its fair share of controversies, including the Rockets’ young star, Alperen Sengun. The Rockets suffered a 93-114 loss to the 2024 NBA champions but looked desperate on the court to hold on to their 3-game win streak. The frustration even boiled over, as game official Jenna Reneau was caught up in an altercation with the Turkish forward.

The incident happened in the fourth quarter when Houston was trailing 78-103, and Sengun was given out of bounds while he was pleading for a foul committed on him. The Celtics’ defense did a fantastic job of blitzing Sengun and Durant, restricting the two to 13 and 15 points, respectively.

The Rockets forward threw the ball at the referee after pleading and visibly used “b*tch” to refer to her in anger. The game official, Reneau, was instantly riled up and decided to give him a double technical and an ejection from the game.

The young star has now addressed the issue and stated that he “felt bad about it.” Alperen Sengun said:

“That was immature by me. That was just in the moment, and I said some things I shouldn’t say, but I felt bad about it.”

Prior to this incident, Rockets head coach Ime Udoka was also ejected from the game after his altercation with referees. The team is fourth in the Western Conference, and Kevin Durant is in pursuit of another title in his career.

The Rockets won their last game against the OKC Thunder, but the team did not seem in rhythm, facing the best defensive team in the league that was playing without its first and second-option scorers.

Alperen Sengun and Co. lead the Rockets against reigning NBA champions

The Thunder were without Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams in their game with the Rockets, but the league’s leading defensive team, conceding just 107.3 points per 100 possessions, did not make the job easy for the opponent. This season’s steals leader, Cason Wallace, scored 23 points, four rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

Riding on Alperen Sengun’s triple-double (17-12-11) and Tari Eason’s 26 points, eight rebounds, and three steals, the team registered a win after losing two consecutive games. The win against the Thunder was hard-won and must relieve the team, as they played without their athletic impact creator, Amen Thompson.
