Jalen Duren has completed his rookie-scale contract, and his expiring season was nothing short of a roller-coaster ride. After a growth-filled tenure in Detroit, he is reportedly set to sign a max extension that could be up to $287 million over five years. In the 2025-26 season, the Pistons center averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds, but his postseason form seriously dipped. NBA legend Tracy McGrady highlighted that fact.
Duren’s performance even got him his first NBA All-Star appearance last season. However, his offensive production was almost half in the playoffs, as he averaged just 9.9 points and 7.6 rebounds in the conference semifinals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. On the “Crossover” podcast clip, shared on Thursday, July 16, McGrady shared his thoughts:
“He is not an offensive guy. So why are we giving someone that’s 280 that’s not effective like that on the offensive end.”
Duren’s offensive slump in the postseason immensely impacted the team’s chances and seemingly left Cade Cunningham stranded. However, if the reports are right, the team is still showing trust in the youngster by offering him a max extension.
NBA analyst says Jalen Duren wants out of Detroit
NBA analyst Chris Haynes expresses his thoughts on Jalen Duren’s prospects in the league. Even though the Pistons center couldn’t perform when it was most needed, the team might still want to bet on him, as he was rumored to re-sign.
Presenting a contrary thought, Haynes said on NBA TV:
“If he takes that (qualifying offer)… he really wants out, he is fed up… he doesn’t want to be there. Even if that’s the case I would say do not do that.”
The Duren and Cunningham duo worked great in the regular season. They were the best defense in the league and were one of the top offenses in their conference. The management might want to make changes for the next season to aim for a different outcome than last season. For now, there is no confirmation of his future.
