The Washington Wizards have selected AJ Dybantsa as their top overall pick for this year’s NBA Draft. The former BYU Cougars forward earlier made his mindset clear about the Wiz, saying that he wanted to become their top pick this year. While Dybantsa’s wishes have been fulfilled, Wizards superstar Trae Young was hyped to welcome the rookie to the franchise, but had one more thing to discuss before Dybantsa can wear the capital’s colors.
Dybantsa, who averaged 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.7 steals in the 2025-26 NCAA season, wore No. 3 for his entire college career. He might not have the privilege to don it in the NBA, given that Young also wears the same number. However, the 2018 NBA Draft’s fifth overall pick has hinted that he was ready to talk about it when Dybantsa reaches his new destination.
After the franchise drafted Dybantsa, Young congratulated the rookie and promised to speak on the jersey issue later. He wrote:
“Welcome to DC
@AJ_Dybantsa !! The story has been written The City is Ready!
We’ll talk about that # soon”
Dybantsa is one of the most hyped prospects of this season and has the makings of a superstar. Moreover, the Wizards, even though it looked like they were on the wrong side of trades during last season’s movements, have made a promising combination on paper thus far.
AJ Dybantsa’s Addition Might Be the Beginning of Something Good in Washington
The Wizards acquired two superstar pieces in Trae Young and Anthony Davis last season without giving up their core. While Davis was nursing a hand injury, Young was also out due to a right quadriceps contusion and lower back irritation, though he suited up for a few games at the end of the 2025-26 regular season.
The NBA’s official account on Instagram shared the moment and wrote:
“With the 1st pick of the NBA Draft the @washwizards select @aj.dybantsa!”
Young and Davis might be just sleeping giants for now, but when healthy, they can become a lethal pick-and-roll duo. Add Dybantsa to that mix, with his elite shot creation and efficiency from the field, and the Wizards seriously have a chance to disrupt things this season.
The last time the Wizards qualified for the postseason was 2021, when Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook led the team to a decent regular season. However, the five-season wait and constant placing at the bottom of the table may finally end. If the three get to play together on the court, fans might see some fireworks in Washington this season.
