Kendrick Perkins has come up with one of the most controversial takes in the NBA after Giannis Antetokounmpo got slated to move to Miami this offseason. The NBA world was waiting for an update on Giannis with bated breath after several insiders speculated that he would be traded before the upcoming draft. However, Perkins has given a damning verdict.
Speaking on ESPN’s First Take, along with Stephen A. Smith, the former NBA player-turned-analyst did not hesitate to share his thoughts on the Greek superstar. He said:
“Giannis will never win a championship with him being a number 1 option. I repeat. Giannis Antetokounmpo will never win another championship with him being the number 1 scoring option.”
To support his argument, Perkins referred to the 2020-21 NBA championship the Bucks won. He said that Khris Middleton was a big part of that championship run and closed out several games as opposed to Giannis. “Money” Middleton scored 40 points in Game 4 and 29 in Game 5 to help space the offense with the superstar forward.
Even though Giannis scored 50 points in the historic Game 6, Middleton was a big part of that series with some crucial clutch buckets. However, saying that Giannis won’t ever win with him as the No. 1 scoring option is surely a questionable take, which was even pointed out by his fellow analysts, including Smith.
Giannis Antetokounmpo was open to signing with Boston and Minnesota, too
Even though Giannis Antetokounmpo eventually signed with the Miami Heat, NBA insider Chris Haynes believed that the superstar forward was open to moving to Boston and Minnesota. The Timberwolves would have been an exciting place for the Greek Freak, alongside a young Anthony Edwards.
Bleacher Report shared the update on Instagram, with the caption:
“Giannis was open to signing with the Heat, Celtics and…MINNESOTA, per @chrisbhaynesnba”
The Heat now have one of the strongest frontcourts in the Eastern Conference with Bam Adebayo and Giannis. However, the team is on the lookout for some efficient wings to add to the perimeter shooting alongside the superstar big duo. That said, the team will have to tread cautiously in free agency, as they don’t have many options with the two worth more than $100 million per year.
