After the Golden State Warriors wrapped up another disappointing season, speculation about Steve Kerr’s future with the franchise intensified. Several reports have suggested that the Warriors’ last game of the season against the Phoenix Suns in the play-in may have been Kerr’s last with the team. The San Francisco Standard’s Tim Kawakami has linked Kerr with a college basketball opportunity.
The former Chicago Bulls wing played for the University of Arizona from 1983 to 1988 and could be interested in returning to coach the Wildcats, according to Kawakami. However, he believes it’s unlikely to happen immediately, given Tommy Lloyd’s success in Arizona.
“I think Kerr’s heart will always be in coaching,” Kawakami wrote. “And I think it was very interesting when he said he wouldn’t leave Curry to coach somebody else, then quickly revised that — “not in the NBA.” Could Kerr take a college job at some point? I’ve always heard that going back to Arizona wasn’t out of the question for him, but that school is doing quite fine with Tommy Lloyd right now.”
After stitching together a highly successful coaching career, including an Olympic gold medal and multiple NBA championships, Kerr might look for a change in scenery.
Steve Kerr not expected to return to the Warriors
The Golden State Warriors’ season unraveled after a spate of midseason injuries and they failed to make the playoffs for the second time in the last four seasons. Many believe Steve Kerr will not be the head coach next season. NBC Sports analyst Monte Poole shared the possibility on X:
“The general belief among the Warriors – openly expressed by Draymond Green – and around the league since the weekend is that Kerr will be comfortably jobless after meeting with Lacob and Dunleavy. Most expect a decision in a matter of days, not weeks.”
