After being down by as many as 29 points in Game 4, the New York Knicks capped off the most dramatic comeback in NBA Finals history with a jaw-dropping OG Anunoby tip-in. With the Knicks now up 3-1 in the Finals following their 107-106 win, netizens are hailing Anunoby as no less than a folk hero in the Big Apple.
Some fans and analysts, in fact, are expecting the one-time NBA champion to receive the most prestigious individual award at this point in the postseason.
“OG Anunoby might be the Finals MVP. What a freaking timeline,” the Legion Hoops account speculated.
“OG Anunoby really might end up winning NBA Finals MVP if the Knicks finish off this series,” analyst Kevin O’Connor said.
“OG Anunoby should receive the FMVP mid series idc, make it an exception,” one fan tweeted.
“give it to him, block plus game winner in a 29 point come back,” another fan echoed.
“If we basing it on efficiency I think I’m picking him,” one fan claimed.
“He showed up and showed out!!” another fan exclaimed.
Throughout the series, Anunoby has hit timely shots to help the Knicks put out fires and even build momentum. In a game when New York was all but counted out, the 6-foot-7 wing kept his team afloat even as Karl-Anthony Towns struggled to support Jalen Brunson on offense.
Anunoby finished with 33 points on 10-for-15 shooting from the field, including seven made three-pointers. No shot of his, however, was as resounding as his tip-in off a Brunson miss with 1.2 seconds left in regulation.
Knicks HC Praises OG Anunoby for Heroic Effort: “He Took on the Challenge and Won the Game”
After the game, Knicks head coach Mike Brown gave props to OG Anunoby for stepping up to the plate amidst the team’s struggles in Game 4.
“I told OG, he’s gotta be a monster on the offensive glass tonight…I don’t know if there’s a bigger play in the history of Knicks basketball…He took on the challenge and won the game for us.”
Thanks to Anunoby’s heroics, the Knicks will now go back to Frost Bank Center (a place where they’ve won twice in this Finals series) with a chance to end a 53-year championship drought.
