On Monday, former Knicks star Stephon Marbury watched as Victor Wembanyama gave a hard shove to Jalen Brunson in the first quarter of Game 3. This prompted Marbury to post an Instagram clip calling for the Knicks to “put that knife in Wembanyama’s neck” in retaliation.
Marbury’s comment is a highly graphic one, and after backlash from fans who thought he took things too far, the two-time NBA All-Star felt compelled to clarify what he truly meant.
“I just wanted to be clear because people have commented on me saying put your knife in his neck. I was actually referring to the knife inside the neck in this specific context. FYI, in case you didn’t know. Elbow=Knife. Let’s play ball! And good morning! Let’s go KNICKS!!!”
Though Marbury’s choice of words took some fans for a loop, there’s no denying that the physicality in the postseason has gone to a different level in the Finals. With both the Spurs and the Knicks trying to end lengthy championship droughts, players have cranked up the intensity on both ends of the floor.
At the end of an intense battle Monday night, it was the Spurs who came out on top, fending off the Knicks in a 115-111 win. Wembanyama finished with 32 points, eight rebounds, and six assists as San Antonio notched their first win in this series.
“He’s a Very Hard Player to Dislike”: NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Gives Props to Victor Wembanyama Amidst Intensity of NBA Finals
Despite the myriad of problems that Victor Wembanyama poses for the Knicks, New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his admiration for the Spurs’ main man.
As per a tweet from French reporter Maxime Aubin, Mamdani gave a bit of a backhanded compliment for the 7-foot-4 big man.
“He’s a very hard player to dislike, even if you find ways. He has a lot of talent, on the court and off it, but we’re hoping he won’t show too much of it during this Finals.”
Mamdani, in fact, has gone so far as to “invite” Wembanyama to a meeting on Wednesday, in the hopes that the Spurs center will be less than completely focused on Game 4.
