Nikola Jokic is currently in the third year of his 5-year, $276 million supermax extension signed with the Denver Nuggets in 2022. He will be eligible for a contract after next season, though he has a player option for the 2027-28 season. However, there is no doubt in Jokic’s mind about his future in Denver.
In a recent statement to the media, the 3-time NBA MVP opened up about his plan for his future in the NBA. The center was drafted by the Nuggets in the second round, 41st overall, but has turned around his prospects entirely after that. He has been regularly in MVP talks and is a triple-double machine, showcasing his all-around playing style.
After being in the Mile High City for 11 strong seasons, the Serbian center was clear about his preference. He said:
“Even if we never win anything else after this, an organic title, it means more to me than anything. I really found peace here. My two kids were born here. Everyone’s here. Peace, home, I found my life here. And I like life here. I don’t feel the need, I don’t have the urge to. We built something here, together as a team.”
Nikola Jokic led the Nuggets to their first-ever NBA championship in 2023 and has created a tightly knit group that is worthy of another championship. He has created an impact even on his former teammates with his basketball IQ and vision on the court.
Former Nuggets teammate hails Nikola Jokic as the “best” over Michael Jordan
Nikola Jokic’s former teammate, Michael Porter Jr., was in awe of Nikola Jokic and explained his reasoning about keeping the Serbian center even above the legendary Michael Jordan. While speaking on the Emily Austin Show, the Brooklyn Nets forward stated:
“People will say Michael Jordan just to agree, but they haven’t watched the film. They’ll just say it to agree with everyone else. For me, with my two eyes from what I’ve seen, I’m going to say Nikola Jokic is the best player I’ve ever seen… From what I’ve seen day to day, I haven’t seen anybody as dominant as Nikola.”
Porter Jr. was traded to the Nets in return for Cameron Johnson by the Nuggets’ management. Even then, his appreciation of Joker says a lot about the Serbian’s towering presence in the locker room.
Nikola Jokic and Co. will next face the OKC Thunder after a loss to the New York Knicks in the last game. They have now lost three of their last five games and are placed sixth in the Western Conference, tied with the Lakers, who are fifth with the same record as the Nuggets. Denver will look to move up the standings to improve its chances of making it to the playoffs.
