The controversy around Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has intensified with time, as analysts and fans have given divided opinions on his playing style. Sports personality Doris Burke was clear in her views about the OKC Thunder guard, calling him a “foul merchant.” Another sports commentator and analyst, Jennifer Welch, called out Burke for spreading the “foul merchant” narrative against SGA.
The feud between the two analysts began with the debate that a major part of Shai’s playing style was free throws. However, Welch disagreed with the narrative on The Sports Gossip Show and openly berated Burke, calling her a MAGA-style propagandist. She also revealed that she visited New York and saw the narrative spreading and people hating on the shifty guard. She said:
“I think Doris Burke is a MAGA-style propagandist with calling Shai-Gilgeous Alexander a foul merchant. Ever since she said that, that propaganda, everywhere I go in New York, all these salty Knicks fans try to diminish SGA’s athleticism, which let’s face it, we haven’t seen something like it since Michael Jordan, and it all started with Doris Burke, who is a Thunder hater, a SGA hater, and a Thunder and SGA propagandist. I’ve completely had it with her.”
SGA is third in the NBA in free throws attempted per game, after Luka Doncic and Deni Avdija. While some believe he depends a lot on free throws, he has brought consistent results for the franchise. The defending champs have begun the postseason with a bang, sweeping the Phoenix Suns 4-0. The Canadian guard averages 33.8 points and eight assists per game in the playoffs.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander trolls Team Canada teammate Dillon Brooks
After the Thunder swept the Suns in Round 1, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and his Team Canada teammate Dillon Brooks had a fun banter on social media. The Thunder guard posted a carousel of images with Brooks and his matchup with the elite defender. In the caption, he wrote:
“everybody wants to be villainous
until the brooms come out
& the dust settles
& you realize who the villain is”
Brooks is notorious for the name “Villain,” and SGA made fun of his moniker. However, considering the bond the two guards have between them, it’s just fun. The Suns guard even commented on the post. The Thunder will now play the winner of the Houston Rockets-Phoenix Suns matchup.
