Kyrie Irving’s return rumors recently caught fire on social media and gave a flicker of hope to the Dallas Mavericks fans. During a media session, the 2016 NBA champion assured that he will give an update on his health after the NBA All-Star weekend. However, the recent news on his availability did not paint a happy picture for the Mavs.
NBA analyst Shams Charania shared news about Irving, who was nursing an ACL injury from last year, on X. Later, adding to the earlier update, the ESPN analyst revealed his agent and stepmother, Shetellia Riley Irving’s statement on Kyrie’s extended hiatus. Charania wrote:
“Irving’s agent, Shetellia Riley Irving, tells ESPN: “This is about Kyrie being 1000% when he comes back and giving himself the best chance to chase a championship next season.””
The Mavericks’ decision to shut the guard down for the season might be a conscience call from the front office, which is already looking to rebuild for next season. While the 9-time All-Star looks to take more time to recover from the ACL injury, fans wonder about his current contract situation.
Kyrie Irving’s contract situation
Kyrie Irving is under a three-year, $118 million veteran extension with the Mavericks that he signed in 2025. He is guaranteed $36.5 million for this season and also has a player option for the 2027-28 season.
The Mavericks’ front office made some bold decisions during this season’s midseason trade period and traded Anthony Davis in an eight-player deal with the Washington Wizards. The franchise might be holding assets in the form of future first-round picks to recruit some good young players and build around the rookie sensation Cooper Flagg.
However, Irving remains with the team even after missing the entire season due to injury. The veteran shooting guard took the team out of some difficult situations during the Mavs’ NBA Finals run in the 2023-24 season. The Mavs need a veteran presence alongside Flagg, someone who can guide him during postseason games, which present a different set of challenges and pressure.
Flagg, who has had a Rookie of the Year campaign this year, is averaging 20.4 points and leading the team in points per game. Even though Irving’s latest health update might upset the youngster who is looking for a hand on offense, if the front office is eyeing a full push next season, the hiatus might be needed.
