LeBron James shocked the sports world on Friday, announcing his decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers over offers from the Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves and his hometown team, the Cleveland Cavaliers.
While James was expected by many to return to Cleveland to complete the final chapter of his career, he has chosen the Joel Embiid-led franchise after its recent overhaul, which saw it replace Daryl Morey with Mike Gansey and trade for former Celtic Jaylen Brown.
James has signed a two-year contract worth $8,000,000 with the 76ers, citing that his decision was not based on money but on what his family wanted. In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), James spoke on the decision, saying:
“This is my last decision,” James said in the social media post. “I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning.”
James also stated that he had considered retiring from the sport altogether after getting swept by the Oklahoma Thunder, and was still unsure about his future and whether he still wanted to come back for one last season.
James will be joining Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown to form a new ‘big four’ in Philadelphia after the Sixers also underwent the same fate in the playoffs last season, getting swept by the New York Knicks in the Second Round of the playoffs.

The Sixers have gone through multiple roster reconstructions in Joel Embiid’s career so far. However, the team has always fallen short in finding a partner for the former NBA MVP who can lead the team by themselves, as evidenced by the parity in on/off stats.
This, coupled with the 32-year-old’s long injury history, has been the main contributing factor to Philadelphia’s playoff woes. Embiid has played just 490 total games, including playoffs, since being drafted in 2014.
Now, despite his age, with James, the Sixers have a reliable star who can shoulder the responsibility of leading the team whenever needed. James, who averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds per game last season, fits perfectly alongside younger stars Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and Jaylen Brown.
James also provides valuable support for Maxey when it comes to point guard duties, allowing the 25-year-old to flourish as a pure scorer, rather than being concerned about facilitating for the team.
Lastly, Joel Embiid is expected to be healthy for the start of the new season. However, with James, the team can now alter the rotations in the regular season lineup to make sure both stars are well-rested and injury-free when it’s time for the playoffs.
