On Friday, LeBron James chose the Philadelphia 76ers as his next destination. The 41-year-old free agent signed a two-year $8 million contract, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. James was expected to sign around the veteran minimum contract, especially if he chose Philly.
The 76ers have one of the most stacked teams before James, featuring Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and Joel Embiid, who occupy most of the team’s payroll. James snubbed teams like the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers in this process.
The 76ers were always one of the strongest suitors given James’ desire to win a championship. With the talent they now boast, with James lining up alongside three bona fide All-Stars, the Sixers could be the team to beat in the East.
However, social media had mixed reactions to James’ decision. One fan wrote:
“Generational hate watch loading”
Another said:
“$8 million for LeBron? That’s either the greatest bargain in NBA history or someone forgot two zeros.”

LeBron James didn’t waste time in explaining his decision to join the 76ers. Just as Shams Charania posted about it, James took to X and mentioned what went through his mind as he prepared for a new and final chapter of his illustrious career.
“I thought I was done when the season ended,” he wrote. “I wasn’t ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game. I was honest at that last press conference when I said I needed to look at myself and deicide if I still love this game. I still truly love this game, and I have more to give.
“The last few weeks have really been special. I’ve never been able to have no clue what to do and take real time to just think. I’ve had an incredible few months with all the people I love trying to figure it all out. This is my last decision. I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work.
“I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship. I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time. Thank you LA. Miami I’ll forever love and Northeast Ohio will always home!”
James has picked a team where he has a position to fill at power forward. It’s arguably the most lethal lineup. However, questions remain over the team’s chemistry. All four players next to him are at their best when they have the ball in their hands.
For James, that’s his best asset, too. He will likely have to take a backseat more often, even more than he did in LA. It will be intriguing to see what role he plays and how coach Nick Nurse navigates potential usage issues.
