U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly scheduled to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals matchup between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks are engaged in a high-profile finals series for the title and have begun with a bang in Game 1. However, analyst Stephen A. Smith has requested the POTUS to avoid appearing at the Knicks’ home game.
Given that the Knicks’ finals appearance has come after 27 years, the atmosphere in Game 3 at Madison Square Garden is expected to be unmatched. The Knicks fans are famous for enthusiastically supporting their team, even during regular seasons. And now that the Knicks are in the finals, they are expected to unleash when the team returns home.
Considering the chaos a President’s appearance can create at MSG, ESPN analyst Smith said:
“He’s coming to Game three of the Finals, and I don’t want him there. It has nothing to do with politics, policy, or anything like that. It has everything to do with him disrupting and contributing at the same time to the chaos that’s going to be existing at Madison Square Garden.
If it were Barack Obama coming to the Garden, I would say, ‘Stay home.’ Stay at the White House… I have been covering sports for over 30 years. And I’m telling you right now, come Monday, for Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, I expect to see an environment I have never seen in my entire career covering sports.”
The Knicks are scheduled to play Game 3 back in New York on Monday, June 8. President Trump announced that he would be in attendance for the game to support his hometown on the invitation of the franchise owner.
The Knicks fans made so much noise outside the arena in the Eastern Conference Finals that the New York Police Department had to ban the out-of-arena watch parties. However, the authorities lifted the ban before Game 1 of the finals.
Spurs will look to launch a comeback in Game 2 against Knicks
Karl-Anthony Towns’ determination to keep pushing himself against someone like Victor Wembanyama put the league on notice. He scored a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. OG Anunoby was also clinical with 17 points, but 12 of them came in the last period in clutch situations.
Meanwhile, Wemby and Co. will look to make a comeback in the second game. The team will expectantly step up on the defense and pose a challenge for the Knicks. However, if the Knicks manage to edge out the Spurs, Game 3, with the unleashed Knicks crowd and a President sitting courtside, will be a real spectacle.
