This week, four-time NBA champion Draymond Green and sports journalist Jemele Hill had a conversation about the credibility of Stephen A. Smith. On an episode of “The Draymond Green Show,” Green questioned Smith’s personal claim as a journalist. Hill echoed this, implying that Smith has fallen short of upholding respect and fairness in his work as a member of the media.
This prompted a response from Smith on his “Straight Shooter” podcast. Though Smith said that he respected Hill, he took exception to the attacks against his body of work.
“You’re just gonna sit up there and listen to Draymond Green, and forget the fact that I was a beat writer? High school, colleges, pros for the first 20 years of my career? And that I earned the right, graduating through every step of this industry…to not have to be in a locker room all the time?”
Hearing Smith’s defense, fans insisted that Green and Hill were onto something with their discourse.
Smith’s work as a journalist has been a hot topic of conversation since he cited “anonymous sources” who criticized Jaylen Brown after the former Finals MVP got traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.
The “First Take” host went on to tell Brown to “get over” the unnamed sources, as citing them has supposedly become the norm in this day and age.
Jemele Hill Fires Back at Stephen A. Smith Over Issue of Credibility: “You Swinging at Ghosts, My Guy”
After Stephen A. Smith issued his rebuttal, it did not take Jemele Hill that long to fire back. In a lengthy tweet, Hill shared that she’d interned at The Philadelphia Inquirer when Smith was working as a columnist for that paper.
However, Hill denied claiming that she was more experienced in terms of field work than Smith. In his rebuttal, Smith had appeared to be upset with Hill for supposedly implying that she’d been to more locker rooms in her own career.
“I didn’t say I’d been in more locker rooms than you and never implied that. You swinging at ghosts, my guy. I don’t have a problem with you. If I did, I’d tell you to your face,” Hill tweeted.
Hill, who currently works as a contributing writer for The Athletic, said in a separate tweet that Smith was welcome to come to her podcast “Jemele Hill Is Unbothered.” According to Hill, she shares Smith’s trait of not “ducking smoke.”
