With each passing day, questions about where LeBron James will play next season increase. He is the most high-profile unrestricted free agent on the market and remains one of the most talented players to hit free agency in recent memory.
James’ agent, Rich Paul, said about 10 to 12 teams are interested in landing the NBA superstar, and most of those teams will have the cap space or flexibility to make room in their budget to sign him.
However, every discussion on potential landing spots for James seems to mention the Philadelphia 76ers as a destination he could consider. He would be a franchise-altering acquisition for the 76ers and catapult them into true contender status after they acquired Jaylen Brown this offseason.
And on Wednesday, 76ers president Bob Myers made a passionate pitch on why James should consider Philadelphia as his preferred landing spot:
“If [LeBron] was here, I’d say, I honestly believe this is your best chance to win,” he said on the Game Over podcast alongside Rich Paul and Max Kellerman.”You have to decide all the other things that are equally important, because it’s his life, right? He has to play with the scrutiny of his decision. People will say, ‘You should have done this,’ or ‘You should have done that.’”
Myers praised James’ basketball IQ and said pairing with Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe would give him a legitimate shot at winning a fifth NBA championship in Philadelphia.
“What I would say is, it’s about winning. Let’s talk about this team, because you can win here, in Philadelphia. If you want to talk about other stuff, about what this guy’s like or what that guy’s like… And by the way, he knows players a lot better than I do. He understands their games. This is a guy who probably watches more basketball than anybody. He’s probably watching a game in February that nobody’s watching. So he knows, not only does he know the guys, he knows how they play.”
While the chances of LeBron James joining the 76ers are slim, Philadelphia would have one of the strongest pitches of any team if it decides to pursue him.
How Would LeBron James Change The 76ers’ Lineup?
Assuming the 76ers do land LeBron James, what would change in Philadelphia? More importantly, what would the lineup look like?
For starters, the 76ers would boast one of the deepest rosters in the Eastern Conference. Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe would likely serve as the starting backcourt, with Jaylen Brown at small forward and Joel Embiid anchoring the frontcourt at center.
James would be a natural fit at power forward. Even at 41, he has plenty left in the tank and remains one of the best players available in free agency. His playmaking, leadership, and versatility would elevate Philadelphia on both ends of the floor, while the team’s talented supporting cast would give him one of the best opportunities to compete for another NBA championship.
