The feud between Jaylen Brown and Stephen A. Smith has continued to escalate, with Brown’s father Marselles jumping in to defend his son’s honor. In response to Smith’s criticism of Brown, Marselles accused the outspoken analyst and ESPN of racial discrimination, claiming that they have unnecessarily attacked the Black community.
Smith didn’t back down. On a recent episode of his “Straight Shooter” podcast, the ESPN personality claimed that the Browns were putting a different spin on his assessment of the former Finals MVP.
“I’ve done nothing but praise Jaylen Brown for the last several years. But yet him, his pops, and other people are trying to paint a different narrative. The man is over in France talking about me…Why? Because I stated facts that have been proven.”
Though Smith has spoken highly of Brown’s basketball skills and philanthropy off the court, he joined the chorus of critics who slammed Brown for calling the 2025-26 campaign his “favorite season.”
This prompted Brown to fire back at Smith, calling him and ESPN “unethical.” Marselles would follow suit, claiming that he was “coming to see” Smith in light of the analyst’s comments aimed at his son.
However, when Brown was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, Smith doubled down on his earlier claims that the five-time All-Star was “not liked” in Boston.
“It’s still weird”: Jaylen Brown Shares Reaction After Getting Traded to Philadelphia
Now that Jaylen Brown is set to team up with Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, the 76ers have significantly improved their chances of going on a deep playoff run.
However, Brown has admitted that he was taken aback when he first heard of his new team. Speaking at his annual youth education camp in Boston, the newly acquired Sixers forward opened up about his reaction upon learning of his move to Philadelphia.
“I got no idea what it’s going to feel like…It’s still weird. My brain is Like ‘Philly of all places. Why would you do that?”‘
Though the Celtics were widely viewed as title contenders this past season, they exited the playoffs in the first round, courtesy of the 76ers. Now, Brown is set to beef up a team that dealt him postseason disappointment just a few months ago.
