Jaden Ivey, waived by the Chicago Bulls on Monday, continued his rant about religion. The 24-year-old guard, who admitted early this year that he is dealing with depression, has been quoting the Bible in some of his Instagram Live engagements. He caused a sensation on Sunday when he labeled Catholicism “a false religion,” one that “is not a true Doctrine of Christ.”
While riding an airplane on Monday, Ivey’s tirade suddenly shifted to Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry. Here’s what the former Detroit Pistons guard said about the two-time NBA MVP, according to The Athletic’s Joel Lorenzi:
“(Curry) don’t know Jesus. … I pray he’s saved in Jesus’ name. … All that stuff isn’t gon matter on Judgement Day. All them rings he got. All them rings LeBron (James) got. All them rings Jordan got. All them people in the Hall of Fame who don’t know Jesus Christ.”
In another video, Jaden Ivey blasted fans for believing Steph Curry is a Christian because the superstar point guard “wrote Philippians 4:13.” Ivey referred to the Bible verse Curry has written on his shoes since playing for Davidson in college. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” doesn’t qualify Curry as a Christian, according to Ivey.
Jaden Ivey’s comments about Steph Curry, LeBron James, and Michael Jordan came after he called the NBA’s celebration of Pride Month “unrighteousness.”
The Bulls responded by waiving him. NBA insider Shams Charania tweeted that Ivey is no longer with the team for “anti-LGBTQ comments amid several rants on religion and other topics.”
Jaden Ivey Calls Bulls “Liars” After His Team Waived Him
The Chicago Bulls announced that they have waived Jaden Ivey before the team’s road game against the San Antonio Spurs on Monday. Ivey vented his frustrations on IG Live a few hours later (via Joel Lorenzi):
“They’re liars, bro. This is lying. They’re lying, saying my conduct is detrimental to the team. That’s a lie. Ask any one of them coaches in there, ‘Was I a good teammate?’”
Bulls coach Billy Donovan addressed the controversial situation ahead of the Bulls’ game against the Spurs. Donovan said (via Jared Weiss):
“Just inside the Bulls, we have people from all kinds of different backgrounds. And whether it’s coaches, from the top, it’s always been we’re all going to work together, we’re going to accept each other. … We’re going to be respectful, we’re going to be professional. … There’s certain standards I think we want to have as an organization and live up to those each and every day.”
Ivey averaged 11.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.0 steals in four games for Chicago before being released.
