Draymond Green Pushes Back on Claims That Victor Wembanyama Is Overly Cocky

This weekend, Victor Wembanyama has been called “cocky” by more than one sports personality. Former NFL star Tiki Barber blasted the Spurs star for having “no humility,” while SiriusXM’s Adam Schein criticized Wemby for not backing up his “villain role” with better play down the stretch.

As for the outspoken Draymond Green, he came to the defense of the two-time NBA All-Star. In a post on Threads, Green acknowledged that Wembanyama is a fiercely proud competitor while also pointing out that some things can get lost in translation.

“Wemby is a bit cocky. Most great players are. It kind of requires a bit of that. However, I don’t think he’s as cocky as people are starting to make him out to be. You have to remember English is his 2nd language. Possibly 3rd. He’s getting straight the point with his words. It’s very direct due to language not cockiness.”

This isn’t the first time that Green has spoken in defense of Wembanyama. When the MVP discourse was still raging late in the regular season, the Golden State Warriors forward backed Wemby’s decision to publicly make his case for the award.

Wembanyama, however, has more pressing concerns at the moment. With the Spurs on the verge of losing their Finals series against the New York Knicks, the 7-foot-4 sensation will have to rally his troops when Game 5 emanates from their home venue.

Thanks to the excellent play of Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and OG Anunoby, the Knicks have been able to deny the Spurs of a home victory thus far in the Finals. Saturday night is an opportunity for Wembanyama and his crew to change that.

“Destiny Is In Our Own Hands”: Victor Wembanyama Reflects on Spurs’ Performance in First Four Games of NBA Finals

In order for Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs to overcome a 1-3 series deficit, they’ll have to start with a fierce conviction in their ability to bounce back.

Speaking to San Antonio-based reporter Maxime Aubin, Wembanyama expressed his belief that the Spurs have always been in control of their fate.

“The ability, first and foremost. The fact that we’ve proven game after game that nobody beats us – we beat ourselves. The confidence comes from knowing that our destiny is in our own hands.”

When Game 5 tips off, the Spurs will have zero margin for error as the Knicks stand on the brink of claiming the 2026 NBA title.
