When Victor Wembanyama backed his MVP case a few days ago, the NBA world was abuzz with chatter. The 2024 Rookie of the Year said he deserved to be at the top of the MVP ladder for what he’s done this season. A few days later, Wembanyama leapfrogged Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Doncic to the top spot in the NBA’s MVP rankings.
His teammate Keldon Johnson may have taken a leaf out of Wembanyama’s book. On NBA on Prime after the Spurs’ win over the Milwaukee Bucks, Johnson stated his case for the Sixth Man of the Year award.
“I feel like I have played every game and plan on finishing on 82, god willing, and I feel like I’m very efficient… I feel like when you put those things together, why not? How can you say that I am not the Sixth Man of the Year? I show up each and every day and I do what I do.”
However, fans did not like the way the Spurs players were conducting themselves.
“Is their entire team just filled with beggars?”
Another user added to the same thought and wrote:
“Is this a Spurs thing? Because it’s annoying. Never seen guys just begging for awards before.”
One more fan was frustrated with the idea of self-promotion on national TV and wrote:
“Okay…can we chill with players getting on national TV and begging for awards..It’s getting ridiculous at this point.”
As per the earlier turnaround in the MVP ladder, this user predicted what could happen after Keldon’s statement:
“Watch him get it now. The NBA likes to reward beggars”
One more user took a dig at the Spurs players and wrote that the team would be exposed in the playoffs:
“Lmao this whole team just cry for rewards all day. just wait til the playoffs”
Besides Johnson, the Sixth Man of the Year honor this season features the reigning title-holder, Naz Reid, and the Miami Heat youngster Jaime Jaquez Jr.
Can Keldon Johnson win the 6MOY award over other contenders?
In the Spurs’ last game against the Milwaukee Bucks, Keldon Johnson led the bench with 16 points, shooting 6-8 from the field. He is averaging 13.0 points this season in 23.2 minutes per game, which are not career-highs.
However, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Naz Reid, who won the title last season, is averaging 13.6 points and a career-best 6.3 rebounds per game. The forward is also having a career year on defense, averaging 1 steal and 1 block per game. The Wolves are fifth in the Western Conference and will now prepare for the postseason.
