One of the NBA MVP voters, Michael Wilbon, has shared his thoughts on the MVP ladder this season and Luka Doncic’s prospects of winning the honor. Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Doncic, and Cade Cunningham constitute the top contenders for the prestigious award.
However, the Detroit Pistons guard’s 65-game eligibility might remain unfilled due to his indefinite hiatus after a collapsed lung. Amid this, NBA analyst and commentator Wilbon has shot down Doncic’s hopes of winning the MVP award this season. A user on X shared his latest statement on the race:
“I have a vote in this. And I will tell you it’s tightened up. My vote, and I’m not even sure the order. I think it’s Jaylen Brown one, I think it’s SGA two, and I think it’s Victor three. And then don’t talk to me about a guy who plays half the court, Luka Dončić.”
However, fans in the comment section did not agree with the statement, as the Slovenian guard’s defense in the last few games has surely improved. A user wrote:
“Last 3 games:
7 rebound, 3 steals
5 rebounds, 4 steals
7 rebounds, 5 steals”
Doncic has averaged 2.4 steals per game in March, and his efforts on the defensive end are visible. He is taking more charges and putting his body on the line to grab loose balls. This has surely led to a debate among fans about whether the 6-time NBA All-Star deserves the honors above others in the ladder.
Can Luka Doncic win the MVP honors this season?
Luka Doncic has put up some stellar performances during the LA Lakers’ recent road stretch. He registered back-to-back 40-point and 60-point games and also hit a game-winning baseline jumper over the defender’s head against the Denver Nuggets. All that has put him in the second spot on the MVP ladder, but is it enough to make him win the honor?
The Lakers’ defense has been under scrutiny for the entire season, especially Doncic’s. On the other hand, Jokic, who averages 1.4 steals this season, has played much better defense and averages a triple-double, 27.9-12.7-10.7. The regular season is in the final chapter, and fans await the final verdict on the NBA awards.
