Anthony Edwards Boldly Claims He Wanted a Lone Battle Against Victor Wembanyama Amid Sensational 4th Quarter Duel

The battle for the face of the league was a show for the NBA world, as Anthony Edwards took on Victor Wembanyama in their faceoff on January 17. Edwards had a night to remember, putting together a career-high 55 points, and a chunk of that came in the fourth period. However, Ant-Man was not satisfied.

The San Antonio Spurs and the Minnesota Timberwolves went back and forth in the fourth quarter, with two superstars battling it out till the end. However, the Spurs held out at the end, 126-123, after Keldon Johnson (20 points) drained a clutch three with 15 seconds remaining.

After the game, a media person asked Edwards about his sensational duel in the fourth quarter with Victor Wembanyama. Ant expressed his thoughts and said:

“I love it. I wish we could’ve just moved everybody out the way and just checked up, me vs. him.”

Although the Spurs managed to keep Anthony Edwards’ 55-point outing at bay to register a win, the verdict won’t be so easy if we compare the superstars’ individual performances.

While Wemby scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, with a crucial block and an important offensive rebound on the last play, Edwards outscored him by more than double, 26 points, along with five made threes on seven attempts. He simply couldn’t seem to miss!

The battle between the top Western Conference teams lived up to its hype, as the Wolves, who are fourth in the standings, have lost back-to-back games, while the Spurs (2nd) have won two consecutive games. Even off the court, the Olympic gold medalist was sly with his words.

“He’s supposed to be the face of the league,” Anthony Edwards quips about Victor Wembanyama after the game

After the game, when the media asked Anthony Edwards how the Spurs bring out the best in him every time the two teams play each other, the Wolves guard had a fun response about Victor Wembanyama. He said:

“They’ve got Wemby. He’s supposed to be face of the league, so I’ve always gotta get up for that one.”

While the debate about the face of the league is still up in the air, nobody can deny what Wemby has achieved in the league thus far. The 7-foot-4 center led the league in blocks in his rookie season (256), while Chet Holmgren, in second, had 190, a difference of 66 blocks!

The 2023-24 Rookie of the Year has propelled the Spurs, which were 15th in the conference before he was signed, to a second spot in three seasons. Thats something special! It’ll be interesting to see how this rivalry grows further in the season.
