Victor Wembanyama pushed his MVP case a few days ago and reiterated a long-debated topic in the NBA: the impact of defense. This week’s MVP rankings have come out, and the recent conversations around the French center have clearly impacted the standings. He is now ranked at the top after overtaking Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and fans are baffled at it.
When the 7-foot-4 center was asked earlier about his MVP standings, his reply led to much-needed discussions across the NBA world. He believed that he was the most impactful player defensively and deserved more applause.
NBACentral shared the latest overhaul in MVP standings on X:
Fans quickly took to the comment section and shared their astonishment at the latest turnaround. One believed that it was because of the recent talks after the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year presented his case and wrote:
“Wemby pr is exactly why NBA falling off now. They just handing out shit to him”
Another fan felt that Luka Doncic’s latest offensive stretch didn’t deserve a fall of two spots in the MVP ladder. He is currently on an 11-game 30-point streak and is having one of the best runs of his career. The user wrote:
“40/8/8 during a stretch where his team went 10-1 and he won player of the week and Luka drops 2 spots. Don’t ever try and say the NBA media doesn’t hate this man.”
Another user commented with his own top 3 contenders for the prestigious honor:
“in order to find the true mvp ,just ask yourself how good does the team do without its best player
My finalist are: Luka , Jaylen , Cade”
Another user was shocked at the recent turnaround and wrote:
“I need someone to explain like I’m 5 what Wemby has done to be getting MVP consideration. I think he’s great but what are we doin”
However, a few users backed Wemby and his MVP candidacy. One wrote:
“For everybody saying that Wemby doesn’t deserve to be up there doesn’t know that hes averaging 5.7 blocks in his last three games”
Whatever the results of the regular-season MVP are, this year’s honor is sure to garner widespread discussions in the NBA world.
Can Victor Wembanyama win the MVP this season?

The San Antonio Spurs were not even close to the top five seeds before Victor Wembanyama arrived. In two seasons, he has made them one of the strongest title contenders. His impact on offense and defense has been crucial to the team’s 55-18 record this season.
Averaging 24.2 points, 11.2 rebounds, three assists, and 3.1 blocks per game, Wemby’s towering presence has been too much to handle for teams. However, his absence did not harm the team that much, as the Spurs are 10-5 without him on the roster. In contrast, Luka Doncic has been a lifeline to the Lakers, even when LeBron James and Austin Reaves aren’t around.
The Spurs’ 4-1 record against the OKC Thunder, the team with the best defensive rating in the league, says a lot about their caliber. However, if Wemby is deserving of an MVP honor is still to be seen.
