The San Antonio Spurs’ late-game collapse in Game 4 of the NBA Finals might come down heavily on De’Aaron Fox, as the trade rumors have begun spiraling in the NBA world. The Spurs suffered a brutal setback in the fourth quarter, leading to a historic 29-point comeback by the New York Knicks. Consequently, a new trade destination has come up for Fox.
Fox is currently on a 4-year, $229 million max veteran contract with the Spurs that will keep him with the team till the 2029-30 season. However, analyst Evan Sidery suggested that the Spurs might look at moving Fox to provide more space for Dylan Harper, who has been stellar in his rookie playoff run.
The insider shared the update on X and wrote:
“Some executives are pointing towards the Nets as a strong fit for De’Aaron Fox, if the Spurs try to trade him this summer to let Dylan Harper take over.”
The Spurs acquired Harper as the second overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft. He is averaging 16.3 points and 6.8 rebounds in the finals series, compared to Fox, who is averaging 14.3 points and 6.3 assists. Harper has led the bench and has shown exceptional skills as a two-way guard.
Moreover, a move to the Nets will reunite Fox with his former associate coach from the Sacramento Kings, Jordi Fernandez, who is the Nets’ head coach. The offseason might bring a change in Fox’s value, given Harper’s offensive surge this season. He might face a dilemma in the offseason about whether to risk his value in the team or join his former coach in a different destination.
Meanwhile, for now, Fox and the Spurs will focus on making a much-needed comeback in the finals.
De’Aaron Fox And Spurs Look To Come Back From 1-3 Hole
The Spurs led the Knicks by a significant margin of 29 points in the fourth quarter. However, an offensive surge from OG Anunoby, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Jalen Brunson in the second quarter helped the team win in the final play. Anunoby made a game-winning tip-in off Brunson’s missed shot to give the team a one-point lead.
De’Aaron Fox contributed 18 points and seven assists, shooting 6-16 from the field, and superstar Victor Wembanyama had a dismal shooting night, scoring 24 points, with 9-35 from the field, and 13 rebounds.
The Spurs will need a LeBron James-esque type of performance from Wemby and Co. if they want to replicate the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 2016 comeback to win the finals. However, considering the Knicks’ form, the task looks far from easy.
