Where Could Rui Hachimura Play Next Season? Examining Three Best Fits For Lakers Free Agent

The LA Lakers’ roster remains in flux as Rui Hachimura continues to pop up in the conversation about high-profile signings. As an unrestricted free agent, Hachimura is reportedly drawing interest from multiple teams across the league.

Though Hachimura has yet to establish himself as an All-Star talent at this stage of his career, the 6-foot-8 forward is nevertheless a solid piece who has averaged 12.6 points per game on 49.9% shooting from the field and 39.4% from deep. Still, insider Jake Fisher reports that Hachimura is “not a priority” for the Lakers.

Though it’s possible the Lakers could bring him back for the 2026-27 season, there are several NBA teams where Hachimura could thrive.

    #1 Detroit Pistons

Cade Cunningham could use some more players that he can spray the ball to. As the All-NBA First Team court general continues to attract multiple defenders, perimeter threats become even more valuable for the surging Detroit Pistons.

Hachimura is used to playing with gifted playmakers, having spent significant time with LeBron James and Luka Doncic in LA. With the Pistons (a team that lost Tobias Harris in free agency), Hachimura would be playing a scoring role that he’s quite familiar with.

    #2 San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are coming off a Finals series in which Victor Wembanyama took up the lion’s share of scoring production in the frontcourt. Heading into the new season, the Spurs could use some more size and firepower at the forward position.

The Spurs have already signed Harris, but they can beef up their frontcourt even more by adding Hachimura. This would give head coach Mitch Johnson the option of fielding a big, versatile lineup with Wembanyama, Harris, and Hachimura. It’s also no coincidence that insider Jake Fischer has named the Spurs as a team showing “interest” in Hachimura’s services.

    #3 Minnesota Timberwolves

Another Western Conference team that could use a scoring punch in their frontcourt is the Minnesota Timberwolves. This offseason, the Wolves dealt Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets in a three-team trade, then shipped Naz Reid as part of the deal for LaMelo Ball.

That’s a loss of 34.7 points per game in the regular season. By swinging another trade to acquire Hachimura, the Wolves (who have limited cap space) can get more scoring help for Ball and Anthony Edwards.
