Anthony Edwards led the Minnesota Timberwolves to a win against the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of their Conference semifinals series on Monday. Minnesota tied up the series at 2-2 following the win.
Speaking to the media after the game, Edwards shared how the win had more meaning for him, citing that the game took place on Mother’s Day.
“Today is Mother’s Day, so I just wanted to win for my mom, so I just wanted to win for my mom and it was just that simple,” Edwards said.
“Was she on your mind all day today?” a reporter asked.
“Sure, sure, I couldn’t lose this game for her,” Edwards answered.
Edwards’ mother, Yvette Edwards, died of cancer in January 2015. The Timberwolves guard was 13 at the time. He also lost his grandmother to cancer eight months later. He wears the No. 5 jersey in honor of his mother and grandmother.
Speaking to ESPN in 2020, Edwards admitted that he struggles with trusting people since the death of his mother and grandmother.
“There are only two people who are going to get my all, but that’s over with,” he said. “Nobody’s going to get it.”
Sunday’s victory was crucial for the Timberwolves as it kept them from falling behind 3-1 after suffering consecutive losses in Games 2 and 3. Edwards and Co. will head to the Frost Bank Center for Game 5 on Tuesday.
