Chet Holmgren and Victor Wembanyama shared an intense moment in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals. The Thunder and the Spurs are engaged in a high-level series, in which Holmgren’s army has taken a 3-2 lead. During a first-quarter timeout, the two teams were headed to the bench when Holmgren and Wemby bumped into each other. The moment went viral.
After the game, the analyst and former NBA player Tracy McGrady asked the 7-foot-1 center about the two players’ rivalry and the shoulder bump. Holmgren stated that they were thinking about winning the game rather than the personal competition. He said:
“The way I see it, when you’re in it, you have to look at it as Thunder vs Spurs. We’re trying to win these games. They’re trying to win these games. That’s how you have to attack it.”
Holmgren scored 16 points and 11 rebounds in the Thunder’s Game 5 win, 127-114. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the team with 32 points and nine assists. Jared McCain and Alex Caruso, off the bench, came up big with 20 and 22 points, respectively.
Victor Wembanyama, on the other hand, scored 20 points and six rebounds without making a single shot from deep. Devin Vassell and D’Aaron Fox did not have a good game. The Thunder’s defense looked intense with everybody sharing the responsibility.
“I’d bet on Chet 10 times out of 10,” SGA reaffirms his faith in Chet Holmgren
Chet Holmgren posted his first double-double of the series in Game 5, and it came at the right time. The Thunder needed this win after some brutal losses in the series. The Canadian superstar praised his teammate, Chet Holmgren, in the post-game media session and expressed his faith in his skills. SGA said:
“I don’t ever worry about Chet just because I know how much he loves the game, how much he cares, and how much he works. He’ll figure it out, no matter what it looks like. He’ll get to it. I’d bet on Chet 10 times out of 10, and he proved why I would bet on him tonight.”
The Thunder will now look to close this out in Game 6, but the Spurs have come back better every time in the series. With Chet Holmgren back in his bag, Wemby and Co. will have to step up if they look to survive and force a Game 7.
The defending champions have tackled the 7-foot-4 center perfectly thus far, a feat almost no team in the NBA could pull off in the regular season. The two teams will again meet on Thursday, May 28, this time in San Antonio.
