The New York Knicks have won a historic title in San Antonio after 53 years in the franchise’s history, as the away team won 94-90. While the win ended the Knicks fans’ long wait for a title, it might also spell doom for some in the league. Several analysts wrote off the Knicks’ chances of a championship, but the team proved those opinions wrong with a dominant victory over the Spurs.
Let’s see who would be the three biggest losers from the Knicks’ title run.
#1. Giannis Antetokounmpo
Giannis has been heavily rumored to be traded to a new destination this offseason, and the Knicks were one of his most favored teams in the league. However, that was when the team was still trying to figure out the frontcourt to make a title run. Now, the franchise seemed to have unlocked the championship potential.
The Greek Freak could have been a serious offensive addition to the Knicks. However, Karl-Anthony Towns has returned to his form after a successful postseason campaign, and OG Anunoby has been a perfect two-way forward connecting the squad. This might lead the Knicks to move on from Giannis for now and focus on developing the existing squad and working to keep them together.
#2. Becky Hammon
The head coach of the Las Vegas Aces was in the news for her controversial statements about the Knicks’ chances of winning a title. Becky Hammon wrote off Jalen Brunson earlier and said that the Knicks “don’t have a 1A dude” to win the title.
However, Hammon’s take on the team has completely turned out to be baseless, given that the Knicks have finally won a ring after 53 years. The HC said:
“He too small. If your best player is small, you’re not winning… Steph Curry is the only dude.”
Brunson also bagged the Finals MVP and proved naysayers wrong. He led the scoring in the last game as well with 45 points.
#3. Minnesota Timberwolves for trading Karl-Anthony Towns
The Timberwolves traded Karl-Anthony Towns before the 2024-25 season when the All-Star center was on a 4-year, $220 million deal that he signed with the Wolves. The Knicks gave Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a future draft pick to the Wolves in a deal that also involved the Charlotte Hornets.
However, looking back, the Wolves might regret trading for a versatile center who came up big when it mattered the most. However, the same cannot be said about Randle, whose production dipped considerably when the Wolves played postseason games.
