The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season is all set to kick off unofficially with the Cook Out Clash at the iconic Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. During the 200-lap event, fans will also witness NASCAR’s new 750 HP short-track package in action.
However, there’s a little problem. According to weather reports, there’s a massive snowstorm hovering over the venue, with no definite precipitation amounts yet by the National Weather Service. As reported by Bob Pockrass of FOX, there could be about six to 10 inches of snow on Saturday, January 31, the day before the 2026 Cook Out Clash.
“Forecast says 6-10 inches of snow possible Saturday but also somewhat uncertain. Tech will be tomorrow,” Pockrass wrote on X. “Teams been told plan is race Sunday and if postponed, then Monday, then Tuesday, etc. Issue will likely be more about people safely attending. NASCAR says can race in cold.”
The Clash practice, qualifying, and heat races are scheduled for January 31, while the main event is set for Sunday, February 1. The forecast for February 1 suggests that the sky will be mostly sunny, with a high of 27 degrees and a low of 11 degrees.
On Wednesday, January 28, NASCAR executive Ben Kennedy took to social media and shared a picture of the salt brine laid down in preparation for the winter storm passing through the Carolinas. While monitoring the situation, Kennedy mentioned that the sport might consider schedule changes if needed.
NASCAR Focuses on Aerodynamic Optimization Following Newfound Alliance With USA Luge
NASCAR and USA Luge have a technical and marketing partnership in place for the 2026 season. Under this deal, NASCAR will back the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 with financial and technical resources.
At the moment, NASCAR is more focused on the aerodynamic optimization of the car as well as the equipment. On that note, Dr. Eric Jacuzzi, Vice President of vehicle performance, NASCAR, said:
“At NASCAR, innovation and performance are part of our DNA, and this partnership with USA Luge is a powerful example of how that expertise can extend beyond the racetrack. From aerodynamics and engineering to fan engagement and athlete support, we’re proud to collaborate with an organization that shares our passion for speed, precision and representing the USA on the world stage.”
Meanwhile, Scott Riewald, CEO, USA Luge, said:
“We couldn’t be happier about the opportunity to partner with NASCAR. We align in so many areas—speed, adrenaline, high-tech equipment, representing the USA—that it only makes sense to come together in a relationship like this.”
That being said, all eyes are now on Winston-Salem’s iconic Bowman Gray Stadium. Fans can watch the race live on FOX (2:30 pm ET onwards) or listen to exclusive radio updates on MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
