Former Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski was recently featured in an interview with NASCAR analyst Bob Pockrass. During the conversation, Keselowski shared his take on the governing body’s commissioner, Steve Phelps’, exit from the organization.
Following the settlement of the year-long antitrust lawsuit, the sanctioning body will witness a major leadership change ahead of the 2026 season. 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports filed an antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR regarding the prize distribution and charter agreement. However, both parties settled after Phelps’ testimony in court.
However, the ex-commissioner’s chats with Brian Herbst were made public during the trial, which led to his exit. Reflecting on that, Brad Keselowski claimed he had a good relationship with Phelps and the sport would miss him. He further added:
“You know, Steve has been a big part of a number of key initiatives for the last dozen-plus years, as I recall. I’ve enjoyed a great personal relationship with him. The sports gonna miss him. Like anybody in that position, you’re not gonna bat 100% there’s been some wins and losses, but as a whole, I appreciate what he’s brought to our sport. I’m kind of sad to see him go, but life has its changes.”
Steve Phelps worked for the National Football League before joining the stock car racing association. He then joined NASCAR in 2005 and spent two decades with the organization. During his tenure, he introduced new racing events, including the LA Coliseum and Chicago Street Course. Phelps also played a crucial role in the sport’s return during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Happy To Be of Service”: NASCAR Veteran Reacts to Replacing Brad Keselowski in the Clash at Bowman Gray
RFK Racing co-owner met with an unfortunate accident ahead of the 2026 Cup Series season. He went on a ski trip with his family, and on the first day, he broke his leg. Following that, Keselowski underwent surgery, and a titanium stabilizing rod was inserted in his leg.
As a result, the #6 Ford Mustang Dark Horse driver will miss out on the first non-points-paying race of the season, the Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium. Later, the team announced NASCAR veteran Corey LaJoie as Keselowski’s replacement.
Reflecting on that, LaJoie expressed his gratitude to the team and Brad Keselowski. He shared an X post and wrote:
“happy to be of service. Wishing BK a speedy recovery. Let’s go get another trophy at The Madhouse.”
The Cook Out Clash will take place at Bowman Gray Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026. Mainstream networks FOX Sports, MRN, SiriusXM, and HBO Max will broadcast the 50.6-mile race live at 8 p.m. ET.
Last year, Hendrick Motorsports driver Chase Elliott clinched his first pole position for a preseason exhibition race and later won the event. Meanwhile, Brad Keselowski ended the 200-lap race outside of the top 20 drivers in P21.
