Will Nebraska Make March Madness? Breaking Down Fred Hoiberg’s 2026 NCAA Tournament Chances

Fred Hoiberg’s No. 2 seed Nebraska suffered a 74-58 loss to No. 7 seed Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Friday. Since the Cornhuskers were knocked out of the conference tournament in their opening game, some are eager to learn if they will make the NCAA Tournament.

As things stand, Nebraska has locked a spot for this year’s March Madness. The Cornhuskers’ loss to the Boilermakers in the Big Ten Tournament won’t affect their qualification scenario for March Madness.

Nebraska finished the 2025-26 regular season with a 26-5 record. The loss to Purdue was only the Cornhuskers’ sixth of the season.

After an early exit in the Big Ten Tournament, Hoiberg was asked about resetting his Nebraska squad for the NCAA Tournament.

“We found a way to regroup after the disappointing game at UCLA,” Hoiberg said on Friday. “Now we got to get that same focus back. Listen, give Purdue a lot of credit. They’re playing great basketball.”

“I thought they were terrific last night and they followed it up with another really good game in this one. … We’re going to go back and watch the film and find a way to get this thing back right and hopefully go back on a run starting next week.”

Many bracketologists believe that Nebraska will earn a No. 3 seed for March Madness. They will find out their seed on Selection Sunday on Sunday.

Nebraska Set to Make NCAA Tournament Appearance Only for Second Time Under Fred Hoiberg

Nebraska hired Fred Hoiberg in March 2019. However, he has only led the Cornshukers to the NCAA Tournament once so far, in 2024, when his team crashed out in the Round of 64.

Hoiberg will take Nebraska to the NCAA Tournament for the second time this year. It has been the best season for him so far, leading the team to 26 wins.

Last season, Hoiberg led Nebraska to the College Basketball Crown championship. This season, he will be aiming to take the Cornhuskers on a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.
