Will Auburn Make March Madness? Breaking Down the Tahaad Pettiford’s 2026 NCAA Tournament Chances

After yet another loss, this time to state rival Alabama, the Auburn Tigers are in a free fall. Even with a star like Tahaad Pettiford leading them, the Tigers have now lost eight of their last ten games, and their only wins were against Kentucky and the also-struggling LSU. This fall from being one of the contenders to being in a bubble has many fans concerned, especially as March Madness is drawing ever closer.

As for their chances, the Auburn Tigers are currently on “the bubble,” which means that while they have a chance to make it to the tournament, the selection committee might just bump them off. After that loss to Alabama, however, with 15 losses, Auburn has a small chance to make it. They still have the SEC Tournament to consider in getting an automatic spot, but with their recent string of losses, that is also unlikely.

As things stand, Auburn is predicted by CBS Sports to be one of the “First Four Out” teams, which means that it will not be making it to March Madness. They are still in the race right now, and could still change some minds from the selection committee, especially with the SEC Tournament, but their chances are very small.

Should the Tigers somehow make it to March Madness, however, they would be a lower-seeded team. This means that they might be paired up with one of the contenders and would probably be eliminated early, around the first or second round. To have a better chance, they would have to have a very deep run in the upcoming SEC Tournament or outright win it altogether.

What Will Auburn’s Road To The SEC Title Look Like?

To get an automatic place in the NCAA Tournament, Auburn will have to perform very well in the SEC Tournament or win, but how are their chances?

The SEC has now revealed the official bracket for the single-elimination tournament, and they have placed the Tigers as the No. 12 seed. They will take on No. 13 Mississippi State in the first round, and this is a team that has beaten them before, 91-85.

Should they win that, they will have to beat No. 5 Tennessee, which would be a very tall task given that the Vols have handily beaten them in the regular season. Awaiting them in the quarterfinals would be No. 4 Vanderbilt, and in the semis, they could face No. 1 Florida.
