March has now arrived, and that means March Madness is almost here and teams are scrambling to either make it or win enough to get better seedings. Michigan is one of those teams, as the Wolverines seek to stay atop and enter the tournament as one of the four No. 1 seeds. However, they might not have guard LJ Cason when they finally get to the tournament.
During that game against the Illinois Fighting Illini, a game that the Wolverines won 84-70, LJ Cason tore his ACL. He was seen clutching his knee in pain and was taken out of the game. This is a serious injury, as ACL tears usually take months or years to fully heal and it often needs surgery, and even with that, it would take months for him to be cleared to return.
This means that Cason’s season is now over and he will not be playing for the Wolverines by the time the tournament rolls around. He will be a massive loss for the team, as the sophomore guard has proven to be one of their best scorers. He was averaging 8.4 points and 2.4 assists per game for the 2025-2026 season and has been consistent, though he has had several double-figure games for the Wolverines before his injury.
The Wolverines clinched the Big Ten title with that win, but head coach Dusty May remained somber as he spoke about LJ Cason.
“First and foremost, our hearts hurt for L.J.,” he said. “You never want to see a young man who has poured so much into this program have something like this happen. However, if there’s anyone equipped to handle this and the rehab process, it’s LJ. He’s resilient, he’s disciplined, and he has an incredible support system around him.”
LJ Cason Says He Will Focus on Rehab After Season-Ending Injury
While this effectively ends his season, sophomore guard LJ Cason has shown that he wants to come back stronger. He released a statement shortly after his injury, saying he will have to rehabilitate his knee.
“This isn’t how I wanted my season to end, but I trust God’s plan, and I’ll attack rehab the same way I approach everything – with focus and determination,” he said.
Cason added that he will still be supporting his teammates in any way he can as they gear up for the national championship tournament, better known as March Madness.
