Michigan Wolverines forward Yaxel Lendeborg has been grabbing attention on the internet following his controversial video where he trashes upcoming opponents Purdue Boilermakers, using abusive language.
As a result, fans want to learn more about his personal life, including his parents.
Who Are Yaxel Lendeborg’s Parents?
Yaxel Lendeborg’s mother is Yissel Raposo, a former college athlete, playing basketball and volleyball at the American University of Puerto Rico. When Yaxel was born, she moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Like his mother, Lendeborg’s father, Okary Lendeborg, was also a top basketball player in the Dominican Republic.
“I do have some natural ability that just comes from my parents I guess,” he said via MLive in October. “I’m super grateful about that.”
Despite both of his parents having strong roots in basketball, it was Lendeborg’s grandfather who took him to basketball courts at an early age. Lendeborg’s family also included three sisters and all of them were encouraged to pursue basketball activities.
When he first started, he used to play baseball and football as well, but never in an organized manner.
“Having fun with my friends is all it was,” he said.
At the age of 8, the family moved to Pennsauken, New Jersey, just outside Philadelphia.
Yaxel Lendeborg described his high school version as “terrible.” He used to play video games for like 19 hours a day. Due to poor grades, he couldn’t play high school basketball. He was also dropped from the Pennsauken High School freshman team for not meeting academic requirements.
“I didn’t really have the will to do school or better myself in general,” Lendeborg told the Memphis Commercial Appeal in 2022. “I just didn’t think I was good enough for anything.”
It got to a point where Lendeborg’s mother had an emotional conversation with him as he entered senior year. She reminded him of his late grandfather, which put a lot of things in perspective for Lendeborg.
After that, it was only up and up for Lendeborg. Not only did he graduate from high school, but even attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He’s currently playing his final year with Michigan before declaring for the NBA draft.
