The UVA Cavaliers logged an incredible turnaround season in 2025-26, reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finishing ranked No. 8 in the nation. They also finished as runners-up in the ACC Tournament.
Now the minds of the coaching staff and authorities at UVA are on the transfer portal. With the end of March Madness on Monday night, we are officially at the opening of the transfer portal. All college basketball players are now, for all intents and purposes, free agents. Many players have already informed their programs that they’re joining the portal or leaving for the NBA Draft.
The UVA Cavaliers have been lucky so far, as no major player has announced his departure via the transfer portal. Those leaving have run out of eligibility. More importantly, key players have announced they’re returning for another season at UVA.

Thijs De Ridder and Chance Mallory announce their return to UVA for another season
Possibly the most important bit of news for UVA this Tuesday is the announcement by Thijs De Ridder that he’s returning for another season with the Cavaliers. An experienced professional player from Europe, the Belgian arrived at Virginia in 2025 and earned First Team All-ACC and All-Freshman ACC honors, the first player in program history to achieve this.
The announcement was made through the program’s X account, with De Ridder stating:
“What’s up Wahoo nation,” De Ridder said on X. “Let’s run it back.”
Hometown guard Chance Mallory also announced his return for a second season at UVA via a social media video in which he thanked the fans and school for a stupendous first year.
