The Michigan Wolverines were crowned national champions after beating Dan Hurley’s UConn Huskies in dominant fashion. This is the first time Hurley has ever lost the national title game and he must now face the daunting task that is the transfer portal, which opened on April 7, shortly after the national title game.
At the time, none of his players had announced that they were leaving. Hurley talked about the portal after the game:
“Is it midnight? The portal’s open, fellas. Did anyone go in yet?” he joked.
He acknowledged that a lot is actually going on behind the scenes, as players announce their entry into the portal while coaches and teams brace for impact.
“The portal has been open now but just not officially,” Hurley said. “There’s a lot going on behind the scenes, which you’re aware of with your team, with other teams, innuendo and other things.”
Aside from the potential transfer portal impact, UConn is also set to lose two of its best players and team leaders to eligibility, as leading scorer Tarris Reed Jr. and Alex Karaban are now seniors. Hurley is also expecting to lose freshman Braylon Mullins, the hero of the Elite Eight game vs. Duke, as he is projected to be a one-and-done and enter the NBA draft.
As of this writing, no UConn player has announced their entry into the transfer portal. But Hurley’s comments after the loss have sparked rumors about potential departures.
Dan Hurley Congratulated Michigan After Finals Loss
Despite all that has been going on behind the scenes, Dan Hurley was full of praise for Michigan, admitting that they were a very tough team.
“Congratulations to Michigan — an incredibly talented, physically imposing team, well-coached, with a great staff and overall a tremendous university given what they’ve been able to accomplish in sports. They’re legit; they definitely deserve to win the national championship,” he said.
For now, Michigan and UConn players seem to still be enjoying the championship afterglow, but they may be bracing for the reality of the transfer portal in the days ahead.
