UConn vs Duke Game Summary
To start things off in their Elite Eight matchup, it was all about coach Jon Scheyer’s squad. Despite the UConn Huskies opening the game’s scoring with a pair of free throws, the Duke Blue Devils jumped to a 10-point lead, 22-12, in the opening minutes of the first half. As the first period reached its halfway mark, the Durham, North Carolina-based program maintained its foot on the gas pedal, 26-16.
At this point in the game, coach Dan Hurley and his Huskies knew that they had to put up a fight for them to have any chance of beating Duke. Unfortunately for them, the Blue Devils continued to put pressure, as their lead eventually ballooned to as much as 19 points, 40-21. UConn did all they could to trim down the deficit, but it was all smooth-sailing at this point for Duke. At halftime, they led, 44-29.
Heading into the second period, it was all about slowly chipping away at Duke’s lead for the Huskies. UConn played much better in the second half to the surprise of Blue Devils swingman Cameron Boozer and team, ultimately trimming the lead bit by bit. The Huskies got within as much as seven points, 56-49. But the Blue Devils still maintained the aforementioned score all the way to the midpoint of the second half.
Come the final 10 minutes of the matchup, the momentum shifted to the Huskies’ side. Coach Hurley’s squad kept going, as the Blue Devils started to scramble at the thought of their double-digit lead fading away. Throughout the final stretch, UConn was keeping the deficit at single digits, with Boozer and company fighting back. But, a miracle heave by Huskies sharpshooter Braylon Mullins found the bottom of the net with 0.3 seconds remaining to give UConn the comeback win, 73-72.
