As Jon Scheyer and Cameron Boozer are likely well aware, netting extra free throws is often the difference between winning and losing. While flops and foul baiting have been addressed at least somewhat in the NBA in modern times, some believe it to be a problem in college basketball.
One journalist appeared to call out Duke as he watched free throw after free throw take place against St. John’s. In a statement on X posted on Friday, Jon Sasser called for teams to study how Duke received so many foul calls in the contest and to copy what they could.
“Coaches need to study Duke‘s philosophy,” he posted. “I’m curious as to how no other program in the country has figured out a way to get fouled every single time they have the ball.”
Of course, it seemed that Sasser was making less of a true recommendation, but used the recommendation as a vehicle to call out the program.
Duke’s Win Over St. John’s Reveals Weakness For Unit
If one thing was clear, it was that both teams played hard. St. John’s had four players play for at least 28 minutes, while Duke had three players who played for at least 26 minutes. The leading scorer of the night was Isaiah Evans, who scored 25 points for Duke. Cameron Boozer scored 22 points.
Of course, in a game that was decided by five points, Duke’s 24 free throws (including nine from Boozer) to St. John’s eight attempts was more than enough to be the difference. Had both teams received the same number of free throws, the math indicates that St. John’s would have won.
Some teams battle opponents better than the rules and vice versa. Against St. John’s, Duke managed to battle the rules better than the opponent, while St. John’s seemingly managed to battle the opponent better than the rules.
St. John’s will need to get better at the second task in the 2026-27 season.
