5-Star Recruit Tyran Stokes Reportedly Set to Dismiss Bill Self’s Kansas for 1 Reason

Tyran Stokes is a five-star recruit and the No. 1-ranked player in the 2026 class. He is being pursued by several teams, but one program might be at a disadvantage: Bill Self’s Kansas Jayhawks.

According to NBA.com’s Krysten Peek, Stokes, who has a partnership with Nike, is not a fan of Adidas shoes, which could discourage him from joining Kansas, an Adidas school. This could give Kentucky, a Nike school, the upper hand.

“Tyran Stokes HATES adidas shoes per krystenpeek on tomleachKY. Enough hate that it is hurting KU’s pitch. Sold his adidas shoes immediately after the McDAAG. Not sure I can remember that in recruiting. We’ll take it,” T.J. Walker reported.

Kentucky is among the favorites to land Stokes after he confirmed that he was visiting the campus during an interview with Peek at the Nike Hoop Summit last week.

Fans react to possibility of Tyran Stokes rejecting Bill Self and Kansas Jayhawks

The 6’8″ forward has had a tremendous high school career, especially the last season. He averaged 31 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 assists per game in his senior season with Rainier Beach. He won the Washington Player of the Year award.

However, he has yet to decide on his college commitment, and fans online are growing impatient.

“why is it taking him so long to commit to UK?” one fan said.

“Pretty sure KU will find a way for going to wear what he wants,” one suggested.

“Adidas pays Kansas $196 million. They’re not going to let Stokes wear Nike,” Walker replied.

“Thats what I think is hard for him believe he wants Kansas but Nike lol so essentially Nike is the biggest recruiting pitch no coach or Kentucky is really making a difference I believe it’s Nike,” another fan said.

“So Stokes hates adidas, has Nike pushing him towards Kentucky, & we STILL haven’t closed on this kid?” another wondered.

“So literally the only thing keeping him from not committing is clearly Pope right? Like if he loves the staff and Nike shoes so much then why not commit?” one fan asked.
