The Iowa Hawkeyes had one of the hottest runs during the NCAA Tournament, going from being the No. 9 seed and making it all the way to the Elite Eight. So far, Ben McCollum is projected to lose only one player via the transfer portal: junior power forward Alvaro Folgueiras.
However, that is a big hole McCollum would have to fill, and with the April 21 deadline approaching, he has to do it fast. With top picks like Flory Bidunga and JP Estrella gone, and four-star prospects like Aiden Sherell now down to their last few teams, the Hawkeyes better act fast.
Here are three athletes they should target:
3 Transfer Portal Targets for the Iowa Hawkeyes
Allen Graves, PF – Santa Clara Broncos
It is no secret that Iowa needs a replacement for Alvaro Folgueiras, and Allen Graves could be an upgrade. There is a chance that he could declare for the NBA draft, but if he does not, he could be a big asset for the burgeoning Hawkeyes.
He averaged 11.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game, making him a problem on both ends of the court. So far, he has not yet cut down his choices, but Duke seems to be the favorite.
Drew Scharnowski, PF – Belmont Bruins
If Graves were to enter the NBA draft and be drafted, Iowa could shift its focus to Drew Scharnowski, who is transferring from the Belmont Bruins.
A power forward who averaged 10.7 points, six rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.3 blocks per game, he is a solid pickup. As a sophomore, he could be further developed.
Mouhamed Sylla, C – Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
The Hawkeyes’ loss to Illinois in the Elite Eight has shown they also need a big defensive threat, and that is where seven-foot Senegalese big man Mo Sylla could come in.
He averages 9.6 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game, which showcases his abilities in the paint. He still needs to work on his passing, but he could be a threat underneath the basket if developed well.
