Travis Steele joined the Miami RedHawks as their head coach in 2022 after a five-year run with the Xavier Musketeers, which was his first head coaching job. In his three years, Steele has a 52-46 overall record.
The RedHawks were in dire need of a good coach post the Charlie Coles era. In his 16-year run, Coles had a 263-224 record. After him, the program had two other coaches until Steele arrived, and both of them had losing records.
Steele’s overall 52-46 record doesn’t reflect what he has been able to achieve this season. The Miami RedHawks are undefeated in the Mid-American after 27 games. They are at the top of the chart with a comfortable margin.
What makes Steele’s run this season even more impressive is the fact that the RedHawks have registered several blowout wins. They have been very effective and consistent on both ends of the floor.
The dominance of Steele’s RedHawks is such that when they win a close contest, it becomes a topic of discussion. Naturally, Steele deserves to be rewarded for what he has been able to achieve with the team this season.
“Miami AD David Sayler tells me that Travis Steele has been offered a contract extension through 2033-34 that would make him one of the highest paid coaches in the MAC,” John Rothstein REPORTED. “The school is also set to provide the needed resources to annually be one of the top mid-majors in the sport.”
Extending Steele’s contract until 2034 shows that the program is seeing and aligned with his long term vision with the team. The additional benefit for Steele would be that he’d become one of the highest-paid coaches in the MAC.
Travis Steele Isn’t Interested in Contract Talks
Even though Steele is on the verge of making history, he isn’t interested in talking about his contract extension. Steele said that he is happy in Miami and appreciates the school’s commitment; he hasn’t even looked at the contract.
“They gave me a contract extension,” he said. “I have not signed yet, honestly, I haven’t looked at it — just because we’ve been so busy going game to game. But I do think it shows a commitment level that Miami has. I’m very happy here.”
“I would say number one, listen, I’m super grateful to be here,” Steele added. “I’m blessed to coach these guys and to be around the staff that we have, man. I’ve never been happier in my life, if I’m being honest, professionally.”
Making his team better and winning more games is all that matters to him right now.
