The 2026 men’s basketball transfer portal still has several big names up for grabs, and one of them is 6’10 Florida Atlantic forward Devin Williams. Considered one of the premiere defenders in the country, he boasts an 11.1% block rate and is top 3 in blocks in the country last season, Several schools, including Mike Malone and the rebuilding North Carolina Tar Heels, are interested.
Former NBA championship-winning coach Mike Malone is now heading the rebuild over at UNC, and one of the first things he is doing is trying to get Devin Williams to commit to the Tar Heels. However, he is also competing against several big schools, including Arizona, Virginia Tech and Oklahoma. In fact, he is set to visit Arizona.
Williams, a sophomore, still has not made his decision yet, especially as the other schools also have great programs in developing big men. This includes Arizona, which is losing its star power forward, Koa Peat, to the NBA draft. Over at North Carolina, the team is starting over with their new coach, so there are some uncertainties, but Malone is a proven winner, winning the NBA title with the Denver Nuggets.
Williams averaged 7.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 2.6 blocks per game. He has a lot of upsides to him, and with him still being a sophomore, this means that there is still plenty of room to develop the former Owls power forward.
Who Has Mike Malone Recruited at North Carolina So Far?
Mike Malone has been busy since arriving at Chapel Hill. He has signed four new transfers so far and is hoping to have Devin Williams as his fifth. So far, he has guards Terence Brown, Matt Able and Neoklis Avdalas in the backcourt and power forward Cade Bennerman in the frontcourt.
Williams would likely battle it out with Bannerman should he choose North Carolina. Bannerman is a seven-footer, though Williams is considered the better defensive option. Malone could also move Bannerman to center and keep Williams at power forward.
