Mark Pope’s recruiting strategy seems to be paying off as Kentucky overcame the disappointment of missing out on the No. 1 recruit in the 2026 class by completing the recruitment of top 10 recruit Ryan Hampton instead.
But missing out on Tyran Stokes, the top recruit in the 2026 class, came with added pressure on Pope, which seems to have prepared the Kentucky coach for dealing with top recruits early. And after the Hampton capture, the focus seems to be fully on the 2027 class.
Beckham Black is next on the radar for the Wildcats, with the five-star recruit recently speaking fondly of Pope and has high hopes for Kentucky should he choose to join it.
“My relationship is good with Mark Pope, and we are building what we have,” Black, a No. 2 recruit in the Class of 2027, said, as per BleedBlueNetwork’s Casey Madison on X. “His offense plays with a lot of spacing, and I feel like adaptable to any offense, so whatever the coach tells me to do, we’ll make that work.”
Mark Pope’s Focus on Recruiting Goes Beyond Beckham Black
After missing out on Tyran Stokes, high school recruiting remains firmly on the Kentucky agenda, with Beckham Black just one of the top players that the Lexington team has its eyes on.
Marcus Spears Jr., currently the No. 1 recruit in the 2027 class, already has an offer on the table from Kentucky, among others, and is heavily touted as being the top priority for Pope and his staff. Spears Jr. was recently seen with his first cousin and new Kentucky starlet, Ryan Hampton, sparking thoughts that it might have been a pitch to join the Wildcats.
Beckham Black remains high on the list too, but with multiple offers for the teenager to choose from, it’s still far from a certainty that he’ll head to Lexington.
