All We Know About Tom Izzo’s Family

Tom Izzo was born on Jan. 30, 1955, in Iron Mountain in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, to parents Carl and Dorothy Izzo. His father, Carl, reportedly ran a family business and passed away aged 90 in December 2015.

Izzo and his wife, Lupe Martinez, married on May 30, 1992. The couple has two children, a daughter, Raquel “Rocky” Izzo McDonald, and a son, Steven Izzo, whom they adopted.

Tom’s daughter Raquel was born in August 1994. She graduated from Michigan State University in 2017.

Raquel got engaged to her longtime partner, Matthew McDonald, in 2019 at Walt Disney World. The couple married on July 25, 2020, and held a special wedding celebration on July 9, 2022, at MSU’s Breslin Student Events Center. Raquel and Matthew have two children: Isabelle, who was born on July 22, 2023, and Sophie, who was born in 2025.

Raquel began working for the Spartan Fund after graduation. However, after leaving the role with the Spartan Fund late in 2018, she joined the Izzo Legacy Family Fund with her mother the following year.

Tom’s son Steven was born on June 16, 2003, and was adopted four days after his birth. He attended Lansing Catholic High School and then graduated from MSU.

Steven played five years for the Spartans under the guidance of his father. On his Senior Night in 2024, Steven heaped praise on his father for coaching him throughout his collegiate career.

“I’m just so thankful that he (Tom) allowed me to walk-on five years ago,” Steven said. “It’s been the greatest decision that I’ve ever made. No matter how hard the lifts are, or how long meetings go, it’s all worth it at the end of the day. And I’m just so grateful that I was able to do it with you.”

Tom Izzo is currently in his 32nd season with the Spartans. He is the longest-tenured coach in the Big Ten.
