The Texas Longhorns are coming off a Sweet 16 run in the NCAA Tournament with Sean Miller leading them as head coach. Going into the transfer portal, the program faces several problems and needs a major reset.
At least six players are leaving due to eligibility. Then there are those who are departing for the NBA draft and announcing for the transfer portal. As such, it’s not simply a reload for Miller; it’s rebuilding on the fly.
3 Key Players Texas’ Sean Miller Needs to Go After Right Now
-
Jeremiah Wilkinson (Georgia)
The Georgia Bulldogs guard could be the perfect replacement for departing Tramon Mark as far as the Longhorns squad is concerned. Wilkinson averaged 17.4 points and 2.0 rebounds per game this past season. There’s a high upside with Wilkinson, as he scored over 30 points in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Moreover, when facing Texas, he averages around 18 points per game and was the big reason behind Georgia splitting the season series.
If Texas goes after Wilkinson, they get a good scoring option from the wing who is known to take his game to another level when it matters most.
2. Miles Byrd (San Diego State)
After four years with San Diego State, Miles Byrd wants to spend his last season with a new team, probably a team that can contend, give him a featured role and necessary exposure. Texas has all of that and they could use a two-way wing like Byrd on their squad.
Aside from his scoring threat, Byrd provides a lot of value on perimeter defense. This past season, he averaged 10.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.2 blocks (career-high) and 1.9 steals per game.
Sean Miller should go after him if he’s not thinking about him already.
3. Freddie Dilione V (Penn State)
Freddie Dilione V has entered the transfer portal for his final season. He spent the first two years of his career with Tennessee before transferring to Penn State two seasons ago.
When Dilione gets going, there’s no stopping him. For someone averaging 14 points per game, he sure has multiple 20+ point games, suggesting his momentum can be a huge upside for any team.
The Longhorns need a dynamic scoring guard and Dilione’s profile meets that requirement.
