Rick Pitino may have had some wins during the transfer portal, but he also lost some of his key players at St. John’s. One of them is sophomore guard Joson Sanon, who was a key part of the Red Storm’s deep NCAA Tournament run last March. He entered the transfer portal soon after it opened and Draft Express’ Jonathan Givony reported that he has now gone to West Virginia to join the Mountaineers.
Sanon, a former five-star recruit, averaged 7.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 21 minutes per game.
The guard also visited West Virginia, but chose the Mountaineers after WVU assistant coach Yusuf Ali built a strong relationship with him. Ali was also responsible for the team adding Iles Sadler, Aliou Dioum, Amadou Seini, and Mouhamed Sylla via the transfer portal.
During his freshman year, Sanon initially went to Arizona State but entered the transfer portal after just one season, averaging 11.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, and one assist per game. He eventually landed in New York, signing with Rick Pitino and St. John’s. This was his second time entering the portal.
How Will Former St. John’s Guard Joson Sanon Fit With West Virginia?
During his two years of playing college basketball, Joson Sanon has shown a lot of flexibility. Experts believe this could be what helps him thrive in West Virginia. His efficiency, averaging just 1.2 turnovers per game, could also help.
In all likelihood, he could be a bench player, playing as the wing whenever Seydou Traore gets rested. However, he could also be a good backup guard who could fill the point guard, shooting guard and small forward slots. He would still be a bench player, though, as Finley Bizjack and Seydou Traore already look like a potent backcourt combo.
