Insider Reveals One Star That Will Benefit From Darryn Peterson Injury Saga Ahead Of 2026 NBA Draft

Coming into their freshman year, Darryn Peterson and AJ Dybantsa were pegged as possible No. 1 picks, with their battles in high school getting many excited for the future. Peterson started out as the No. 3 prospect, but after victories over Dybantsa’s Utah Prep, he overtook him to become No. 1 by the end of the season.

However, as the season progressed, Darryn Peterson has raised many questions on his injury status while AJ Dybantsa struggled in making BYU a contender. Even Peterson’s head coach, Bill Self, was confused with his injury status as he exited the game against Oklahoma State early despite playing very well.

As the drama surrounding Peterson plays out and Dybantsa continuing to struggle in making BYU into a contender, basketball insider Adam Finklestein reveals that this situation might be very good for the person who was the No. 2 from their class, Duke freshman Cameron Boozer, the son of Carlos Boozer.

“Amidst all the drama around Peterson, amidst AJ Dybantsa putting up huge numbers but BYU is losing games, all Cameron Boozer has been is the best player in college basketball, which quite candidly has less of a supporting cast around him than Cooper Flagg had a year ago, as one of the best teams in college basketball,” Finklestein said.

At the start of their senior season in high school, AJ Dybantsa was ranked No. 1, while Cameron Boozer was No. 2, with Darryn Peterson being No. 3. However, as the season continued, Peterson outshone both Dybantsa and Boozer, eventually becoming No. 1. He is also projected to be the No. 1 pick while Dybantsa is No. 2.

Darryn Peterson Leaving Early During Games Raising Questions

As the 2025-2026 season continued, Darryn Peterson had suffered through a plethora of injuries, which included quad cramping, a hamstring strain and an ankle injury. While those injuries are serious, his commitment to Kansas has been thrown into question because of the limited times he has played.

Those injuries have resulted in Peterson only playing in 15 of Kansas’ 26 games so far, and of those 15 games that he played, he left the game early three times. It does not help when he had a last-minute DNP due to flu against Arizona. He has so far been slammed for not playing, though Bill Self has defended his star player a lot.
