Analyst for the official NCAA website, Andy Katz, has released the latest power rankings for men’s basketball, and he has placed Michigan at No. 1, followed by Duke, Houston, Arizona, St. John’s, UConn, Florida, Illinois, Texas Tech and Iowa State in the top 10, respectively. This comes as the Wolverines won their tenth game in a row, while Duke has shown that their rivalry game loss to North Carolina has not really slowed them down.
As expected, many fans were not impressed and quickly replied to the latest power rankings with criticisms or their own takes on what it should be.
“How is Andy Katz employed?” asked one fan.
“Beyond comical at this point. The campaign to disparage the ACC is backfiring, as these journalists lose credibility every time they post.” another person pointed out.
“These teams aren’t bad for Top 10 (except St Johns) but the order they are in is insane. Should be St John’s out, Florida in 10, move Uconn Illinois, Tech, and ISU in 5-8 (can select the order they appear, dont care), Purdue and Florida for final Top 10. Kansas in 11 isnt bad,” offered one fan.
“Really want to know why Andy hates Purdue so much. It’s almost vindictive.” one Boilermakers fan noted.
“Florida would be a 7 point favorite over St. Johns on a neutral court. 😂” said another person.
“Does ts say Wisconsin and Nebraska over Purdue after Purdue had 2 Q 1-A games,” added another Purdue fan.
Purdue fans decried the rankings, as the Boilermakers were on a roll and are on a four-game winning streak, with impressive victories over Iowa and Nebraska, though this streak did come after back-to-back losses against UCLA, Illinois and Indiana.
Andy Katz Explains How He Placed Some teams In The Power Rankings
While the original tweet did not reveal the reasons for each of the power rankings, Andy Katz’s article on NCAA.com did, explaining that Michigan gained No. 1 due to the Wolverines becoming the new No. 1 overall, while Arizona fell from No. 1 to No. 4 after a recent spate of injuries. He added that Houston continuing to dominate the Big 12 was the reason for its rise from No. 7 to No. 3.
He did reveal that Purdue managing a road win against Nebraska was good enough to get the Boilermakers to rise from 21 to 18. Meanwhile, he retained St. John’s after that controversial game at Providence.
