According to reports, John Calipari and the Arkansas Razorbacks are closing in on the recruitment of four-star Davion Thompson. He is considered a blue-chip combo guard and is the 21st-ranked prospect in the nation for the Class of 2027, according to 247Sports.
Recruiting analyst Dylan on X reported Saturday that the Razorbacks are in the “driver seat” to land Thompson, who is set to announce his college commitment on Wednesday.
According to On3 reporter Joe Tipton, there’s also a possibility that the star point guard will reclassify and play in college this year. Thompson’s final four schools include Arkansas, Baylor, Vanderbilt and Michigan. If he were to choose the Razorbacks, Calipari would be bringing two five-star and three four-star recruits this offseason.
According to 247Sports, Illinois was also after the services of Thompson. He’s considered the top recruit out of the state of Missouri and the fifth-best point guard in his class. Per the 247Sports Composite ranking, he’s considered a full-fledged five-star recruit.
John Calipari is attracting Davion Thompson to Arkansas
Speaking with Joe Tipton in late May, Davion Thompson opened up about what exactly attracts him to the corner of Northwest Arkansas where Fayetteville is located. It’s all about the coaching for him.
“The reputation that Coach Cal has, he has a lot of guards that come through, and he puts them in the NBA in the best position to chase their dreams,” Thompson told Tipton. “They’ve been on me since I was a sophomore, so I have a good relationship with them. I liked the visit when I went up there.”
It makes sense, as John Calipari has a legendary reputation in the SEC and the wider world of college basketball. If anyone thought he wasn’t the same man who led Kentucky to a national title, the way he has turned the Hogs into bona fide Final Four contenders certainly changed everyone’s opinion. Just last season, he led Arkansas to its second SEC Tournament title. He did so while developing one of the top prospects for the 2026 NBA draft, point guard Darius Acuff Jr.
It might be minor, but there’s some connection between Davion Thompson and the coach, who also played point guard during his own college career in the 1980s.
