Dusty May might be the hottest name in the basketball coaching pool right now. The recognition is well deserved because of what he has been able to accomplish with the Michigan Wolverines since taking over as head coach in 2024.
When he joined the program, the Wolverines were a struggling team, found at the bottom of the Big Ten table. In just two years, the 49-year-old has transformed them into one of the best teams in the country.
May proved his coaching prowess this year with the NCAA title win with the Wolverines. This was Michigan’s first NCAA title since 1989. Ending a drought that had been going on for decades came with certain perks for May.
He has signed a contract extension and is expected to stay at Michigan through the 2029-30 season. However, his current commitment to the Michigan program isn’t enough for the NBA franchises to stop pursuing him.
Several teams have emerged as possible landing spots for May over the last few months. Recently, the Orlando Magic took over that conversation. According to Marc Stein, the Orlando franchise is very impressed with May’s work and is exploring the possibility of bringing him in.
The relentless pursuit by NBA franchises is rubbing some fans the wrong way. Some fans recently expressed their feelings on social media.
“The Michigan fetish getting kinda crazy no?” a fan wrote.
“IN COLLEGE THE COACHES ARE THE STARS!!! WHY WOULD HE LEAVE FOR A JOB WHERE YOU CAN GET FIRED A SEASON AFTER WINNING A COTY AWARD,” a fan wrote.
“This is a silly piece. Why in the world would he go to the NBA. Not to mention, he got a raise, he’s said he staying and he’s had the world at his finger tips. Would be an awful move IMO,” a fan wrote.
“I Doubt he leaves Michigan for the Magic,” a fan wrote.
“Sure lets go w a guy who has never coached in the nba..totally see that working out..maybe we can also toss in a max deal for suggs and wendell too while we are at it…How about no,” a fan wrote.
Fans aren’t necessarily upset that NBA teams are targeting May. Their primary concern is whether he will be the right fit for the NBA based on his college success.
Marc Stein on Dusty May – Orlando Rumors
In his recent report, citing league sources, Stein wrote that “the Magic are admirers of Michigan’s Dusty May and would have a level of interest if he were indeed available.” As of now, May doesn’t seem interested in moving out of Michigan.
We have seen this pattern develop before. Coaches never really come out and say that they want to move out, especially when they’re having success in their positions. So, if May decides to leave, it’ll be a surprise announcement.
The Michigan fans have strong reasons to believe that May’s commitment to the program won’t end abruptly. Regardless, it’s interesting to see how May’s stock has gone up since he won the national title.
